Graceland Specifications

The melding of South African styles and Simon's trademark sensibility made for one of the most intriguing albums--not to mention commercial hits--of the '80s. At once lively, thoughtful, gorgeous, and tough, Graceland acknowledges splits both in South Africa's social fabric and in Simon's personal life (the title track is a clear descendant of the earlier "Hearts and Bones," a song about the singer-songwriter's brief marriage to Carrie Fisher). Humor is hardly absent from the mix, though; witness the addled "I Know What I Know" and the fable-like "You Can Call Me Al." --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews

Paul Simon was in need of a return in 1986 for several reasons. His marriage to actress Carrie Fisher had come apart. His latest album, the beautiful "Hearts and Bones," was not commercially well satisfied. An attempt to resume contact with Art Garfunkel had come for their usual animosity aside. He traveled to South Africa to the musicians who had studied for a visit a few years.

The result of "Graceland" was. In his attempt to rejuvenate his musical spirit, Simon connected to a hostGood African musicians who pushed him to write music that his creative muse known raised a new record. Besides introducing Americans Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Los Lobos brought Simon, Linda Ronstadt, The Everly Brothers, Youssou N'Dour and Adrian Belew on board his unconventional brewing. Simon is the music met so fascinating that he married his lyrics most of the songs (that songs like "Diamonds on the soles of her shoes" and "Homeless" byMini-masterpieces).

Simon found joy in creating some of the weird moments made, such as "You Can Call Me Al" (and accompanying video with Chevy Chase) and "The Myth of Fingerprints", in his solo career. The songs mixed together as a coherent whole, with no filler to find titles, and earns the number of Grammy Simon collected in its wake.
