Mother

Mother Overview

MOTHER is the solo debut from Natalie Maines, the always provocative, multi-platinum, Grammy-Award winning singer of the Dixie Chicks. On MOTHER, people will hear a new direction from the singer. Heavily influenced by the more rock-based, edgy and intense sound of title track, and Pink Floyd cover, "Mother," Maines teamed up with friend and Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, and guitar wizard Ben Harper, who co-produced the record with Maines. The album was recorded in Harper's studio.

"I wanted this music to be very different from the Dixie Chicks," she says. "Lots of albums by lead singers might just as well have been made by the band, but I think this is very different from anything the Chicks could make. That separation and distinction was important."

One of the initial songs they tackled was the soaring, tortured ballad from Pink Floyd's The Wall that ultimately gave this album its title. The result is a cover, which NPR's Ann Powers has described as "a tender acknowledgment of how fear can entrap all of us, even when we want to do nothing but love."

"Free Life" was written by Dixie Chicks collaborator and Grammy-Award winner, Dan Wilson. As different as this new music is from her Dixie Chicks roots, the songwriting credits on "Come Cryin' to Me" reveal that even her fellow Dixie Chicks Martie Maguire and Emily Robison still kept a hand in the new project. "That was a song we decided was too rock for Taking the Long Way," Maines explains, "but it really felt right to have a piece of them on here."

All of the album's 10 songs were selected because of personal connections to Natalie. Jeff Buckley's "Lover You Should Have Come Over" was a reminder for Maines of the early days in relationship with her husband, actor Adrian Pasdar. She discovered "Without You" on her friend Eddie Vedder's ukulele album, and heard a groove that she thought might fit.

What started out as a fun session with friend Ben Harper, quickly developed into the solo debut from one of our generations most coveted voices.

Spirityouall

Spirityouall Overview

Bobby McFerrin brings it all back home with his new album, spirityouall, re-imagining Americana with beloved spirituals and original songs. Bobby invites us along on his everyday search for grace, wisdom, and freedom, embracing bluegrass and the baroque, heartfelt lyrics and wordless melodies, joy and sorrow. He throws some unexpected new ingredients into the melting pot and invites us to sing together through life's trials and triumphs. Across genres, across boundaries, across generations, spirityouall raises the roof with joyful grooves.

About the Artist:

For decades Bobby McFerrin has broken all the rules. The 10-time Grammy winner has blurred the distinction between pop music and fine art, goofing around barefoot in the world's finest concert halls, exploring uncharted vocal territory, inspiring a whole new generation of a cappella singers and the beatbox movement. His new album, spirityouall re-imagines Americana with beloved spirituals and original songs, raising the roof with joyful grooves. This bluesy, feel-good recording (featuring an incredible lineup of great musicians including Larry Campbell, Charley Drayton, Gil Goldstein, Larry Grenadier, Ali Jackson, and Esperanza Spalding) is an unexpected move from the music-industry rebel who singlehandedly redefined the role of the human voice with his a cappella hit "Don't Worry, Be Happy," his collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Chick Corea and the Vienna Philharmonic, his improvising choir Voicestra, and his legendary solo vocal performances. All that pioneer spirit and virtuosity has opened up a great big sky, including game-changing experiments in multi-tracking (Don't Worry, Be Happy has seven separate, over-dubbed vocal tracks; Bobby"s choral album VOCAbuLarieS has thousands). But virtuosity isn't the point. "I try not to "perform" onstage," says Bobby. "I try to sing the way I sing in my kitchen, because I just can't help myself. I want to get people to just sing the way they do when they're just hanging out waiting for the bus, in their regular "blue-jeans" voice. I want to bring audiences into the incredible feeling of joy and freedom I get when I sing. "Ask him where he went to school, and he just might tell you that he is a graduate of MSU: Making Stuff Up. "Music for me is like a spiritual journey down into the depths of my soul," says McFerrin. "And I like to think we're all on a journey into our souls. What's down there? That's why I do what I do."

Our Version of Events Overview

While still a teenager, Emeli Sandé got her fi rst big break as a singer and songwriter as she was named a contest winner for a BBC songwriter contest and
record-deal offers soon started pouring in. But instead of signing to a label, Sandé put her music career on hold and embarked on a six-year degree in medicine. Studying at Glasgow University, she specialized in clinical neuroscience cause I really like all the brain stuff. As evidenced on her debut album Our Version of Events, she holds a deep affi nity for all the heart stuff and soul stuff as well. Defying categorization, she appeals to fans of pop, credible singer-songwriters, soul, dance and everything in between. She has already had an amazing 12 monthsas her album debuted at #1 in the UK in February and she has had four songs from that album chart high on the UK singles chart, while guesting on four others that charted Top 10 for other artists. She has also been lauded as a songwriter, penning songs for UK artists as varied as Leona Lewis and Susan Boyle, while being identifi ed by none other than Simon Cowell as his favorite songwriter of the moment. She has caught the eye of diverse titans of the music industry with early admirers including Coldplay and Alicia Keys. The former tapped her to open their UK and European dates in December as well as a leg of their upcoming North American summer tour and the latter was so impressed after she opened for her in the UK last summer that she co-wrote and produced the track Hope from Our Version of Events and has been collaborating with Sandé for her own next album. Keys has also been effusive in her praise, telling Dazed and Confused she was a magnifi cent new artist... I just love her style and her fl ow super raw and Adele, upon viewing Sandè s performance of the track Next To Me on
Jools Holland, was compelled to Tweet How incredible is she? Sandé won the coveted BRIT Critics Choice Award for 2012 awarded this past February and in
an unprecedented twist, was also nominated as Breakthrough Artist at the BRITs as well.

Music of Nashville (Season 1, Volume 1)

Music of Nashville (Season 1, Volume 1) Overview

There is plenty to like about the first season of ABC's prime-time drama Nashville. The centerpiece, of course, is music. Actors Connie Britton (Rayna James), Hayden Panettiere (Juliette Barnes), Charles Esten (Deacon Clayborne), Clare Bowen (Scarlett O'Connor), Sam Palladino (Gunnar), and others actually perform the songs in the series backed by a host of ace studio players. T Bone Burnett is Nashville's music producer, and he's enlisted some of Music City's finest songwriters and the help of longtime friend Buddy Miller to co-produce (and perform on) most of the songs here.

The end result is a collection that provides a compelling argument that contemporary country music doesn't need to divorce itself from its history. It also makes a solid case for the radio accessibility of Americana and alt-country. Most of the music here -- Britton's elegant ''Buried Under,'' her duet with Panettiere on ''Wrong Song,'' and Panettiere's duet with Esten on ''Undermine'' use contemporary country tropes, without sacrificing soul for production sheen. In other words, it's both the singer and the song that hook a listener.

Virtually all of these instruments (especially drums and percussion) sound warm and natural, and serve to accent and support the vocals rather than overwhelm them. Panettiere's ''Love Like Mine,'' and her performance on the radio mix of ''Telescope'' would likely chart if they were released as singles. Americana numbers such as the Civil Wars' ''If I Didn't Know Better,'' performed by Palladino and Bowen, scored big on YouTube and prompted numerous Twitter conversations. So too the rootsy version of ''Telescope,'' performed by Lennon & Maisy Stella (aged nine and twelve, who play Britton's daughters on the series), with only an acoustic guitar for accompaniment. ''Twist of Barbwire,'' performed by Jonathan Jackson (Avery), is a tom-tom and whammy bar-driven rocker with just enough twang to make it walk between rockabilly and alt country. It probably doesn't hurt that it was written by Elvis Costello. Esten's ''Sideshow'' is a lovely ballad that walks dead center between Americana and contemporary country.

Usually, soundtracks for television shows are a mixed bag at best. The Music of Nashville is a very notable exception.

True Believers

True Believers Overview

Capitol Records Nashville recording artist Darius Rucker will release his third country studio album, True Believers, on May 21. Darius wrote ten of the twelve tracks on True Believers, produced by Frank Rogers, and the album features the Top 20-and-climbing critically-acclaimed single Wagon Wheel written by Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show, based on a sketch by Bob Dylan.

I m very proud of this record, Rucker reveals. The songs, the co-writes, the vibe it s all really different from what we ve recorded and released on the past two albums, and I hope that difference resonates with the fans.

Rogers, who also produced Learn To Live and Charleston, SC 1966, shares, When we were recording True Believers, we had Darius record a lot of the vocals for this album in his hometown of Charleston. I think as a result of that relaxed setting he was more experimental vocally, and honestly, he sang better than ever before.

Rucker s first two country albums, Learn To Live and Charleston, SC 1966 both topped the Billboard Country album chart and produced five No. 1 singles including Come Back Song, This, Alright, It Won t Be Like This For Long and Don t Think I Don t Think About It.

In 2009 Rucker was named New Artist of the Year at the CMA Awards. Most recently, he achieved a personal goal and childhood dream when he was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry on October 16, 2012. Rucker will kick off his True Believers Tour on May 9 in Estero, Florida, visiting more than 20 cities across the U.S. before wrapping up in Clarkston, Michigan on June 30.

Gospel Collection

Gospel Collection Overview

Who dares trot out the contradictions between Jones’s dissolute life and the sentiments of these songs when the man has always been such a True Believer of some sort? He calls this his musical response to the infamous 1999 car wreck that caused him to finally give up booze, caffeine, and tobacco. Circuit-preacher’s son Billy Sherrill, who guided Jones’s 1970s commercial ascension, came out of retirement to produce these 24 songs (on two discs) and, especially for a guy accused back then of gussying up country too much, he forges an austere sound. Jones’s voice can’t execute the many twists, turns, and tricks it once did, but it’s still ripe with deep feeling; when he sings "I’m so tired and so weary," you don’t doubt him. So forgive them both for trying too hard occasionally ("The Old Rugged Cross") and appreciate this for the old-school testimonial, musical and spiritual, that it is. --John Morthland

George Jones and Tammy Wynette - 16 Biggest Hits by George Jones, Tammy Wynette

This product is manufactured on demand using CD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply.

16 Biggest Hits Specifications

George Jones and Tammy Wynette had already been married three years when they began cutting duets together, and this album's opening pledge of eternal love, 1971's "Take Me," followed by their recitation of wedding vows in "The Ceremony," sets the tone early on. Somewhere soon thereafter, Jones began hitting the bottle and the blow again, and by 1973 he and Wynette were knocking on wood and pledging "We're Gonna Hold On." They did reconcile, but the next year they were lamenting "We Loved It Away," and in 1976 they checked out with the lachrymose "Golden Ring." By 1980 they were feeling more conciliatory toward each other, explaining themselves with the comeback "Two Story House." Great autobiographical track not about the ups and downs of their relationship: "(We're Not) The Jet Set." Here's some country music that means what it says to the people who sang it. --John Morthland
