Coco

Coco Overview

Singer/songwriter Colbie Caillat is one of the most celebrated artists to emerge from the growing talent pool of digitally-savvy self-launched artists, whose rise to prominence as the #1 unsigned artist on the popular myspace site has been largely due to her refreshing sense of understatement.

With no marketing push and only the power of the music behind her, Caillat became a sensation on the social networking site. Rolling Stone highlighted her as one of the top female artists on myspace. Ultimately, her number of friends swelled to more than 100,000. Her profile has been visited over 3 million times, and she has more than l0 million plays. She's currently averaging 50,000 + a day.

The songs on Caillat's debut album COCO mirror the Malibu-born Caillat's low-key, refreshing style. Armed with her acoustic guitar and her dusky vocals, she evokes the same gentle, yet spirited style of her musical influences John Mayer, Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill and The Weepies. The laid-back tempo of Hawaii, where she spent twice annual family vacations, is echoed in the music.

"She's the real thing," stated Monte Lipman, President of Universal Republic Records. "From her unique songwriting skills to her powerful but understated presence, Colbie has connected to millions of music lovers simply through the power of her music.

Coco Specifications

Even without MySpace, singer/songwriter Colbie Caillat is sure to have found an audience, but her oft-accessed page accelerated the process, mostly on the strength of the effervescent "Bubbly." On her first full-length album, the California native conjures up clear skies and warm breezes. Not that the lyrics revolve around her stomping grounds of Malibu and Ventura County, but her mellow melodies sound like products of those places (co-writer Jason Reeves' ukulele playing reinforces the beach music impression). Instead, Caillat sings about love in all its guises, as on "Capri," a tribute to a mother-to-be. The daughter of audio engineer Ken Caillat (Fleetwood Mac's Rumours), who provides production assistance, Colbie combines acoustic pop, light jazz, and blue-eyed soul on Coco. Despite her young age--22 at the time of its release--the record seems likely to attract an older audience, although her sunny singing manages to sound centered and spirited at the same time. Coco doesn't offer anything startlingly new, but its relaxing vibe is hard to resist. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Customer Reviews

Yes, I found on MySpace, but seriously, this girl is talented and would have been extremely one way or another. With a velvety voice and a great sense of serenity (you know immediately that a song by Colbie Caillat alone is already a business), these young musicians to follow in travel supplies. Compare Jason Mraz, if you want (the island, blues, folk, rock-fusion sound fits both wonderful), but Caillat is a recognizable voice of their own.

Their debut album"Coco," Caillat shines on almost every track, and even the few that are my favorites are still incredibly catchy and wonderfully light and comfortable.

This is the definition of feel good music.

The individual selected for radio play were huge successes, and it is easy to see why. "Bubbly" is a fun track, one of the best on the disc, and "Truly" is the best song on the album. From the moment he says, "I count on you" just know that this is areal and personal approach to music, a sweet, often simple but always sincere collection of songs that reflect a time in a man's life. These songs can be connected to anyone who has ever been, where Caillat young at the time, and that is pretty much all. "Really," has a deep sense of raw emotional power of its delivery notice and Colbie's voice is simply exceptional. This is due to the very structure of "Battlestar," which follows with caution, "Really."

The same with the cupand slight feeling of "Bubbly" open book "Oxygen" and "The Little Things", and also on "Tied Down" is a bouncy feel. "Oxygen" has been a very smart way to open the album. It is not as wonderful as "Bubbly" (actually, what I sing now?), But tells you immediately that the first was not a fluke. It has a catchy and memorable on the vibe, and a sweet presence.

This is music for happy people!

"One Fine Wire 'and` Midnight Bottle "is really niceChemistry them, especially "Midnight Bottle", which is a bit 'standout here. Current is a different type of back (including the full album is relaxed), which captures only the ear. Besides, who does not like the idea of setting a good bottle of wine in the silent night, the rest of the stars outside, only for the beauty of these young talents in crooning voice?

"Feelings Show" is a bit 'a shot for me. I like parts of it, but then I kind are easilyirritated with the choir. "Tailor Made" and "magic" are good songs, but to forget, especially when placed against the rest of the album.

"Capri" the album includes the songs more sincere and emotional be available here. This is a handkerchief, and one that feels much better I felt.

Just "WOW".

So with the recent release of their second album (which I just bought five minutes) I thought it only appropriate to finally publish theirA debut album that I listened to a number of times in the last two years. Pick up, if not yet happen to you. And 'well, it's worth it!
