The Very Best of J. J. Cale (The Definitive Collection) Overview

A full 20 favorites from this institution of a singer-songwriter, whose songs have been borrowed by Clapton, Santana, Skynyrd and so many others. You get Cocaine; After Midnight; I'll Make Love to You Anytime; Call Me the Breeze; Sensitive Kind; Lies; Magnolia; Crazy Mama; Cajun Moon , and more!

The Very Best of J. J. Cale (The Definitive Collection) Specifications

As best-of collections go, this one is uncommonly understated. Which is probably appropriate given that the singer/songwriter it celebrates is one of the most taciturn rock & rollers to ever saunter down a dusty road. Decades into a career that has produced more commercial success than one might suppose, Cale's Very Best consists of one disc; outtakes and rarities padding a second disc don't fit Cale's less-is-more aesthetic. There's no essay elevating the Oklahoman as a great blues-rock pathfinder, though Eric Clapton and Dire Straits are among the platinum performers who owe him a debt; just musician credits and a modest dedication from Cale adorn the booklet. (Hey, at least the camera-shy Cale sat still for a photo shoot!) As for the music, this 20-song CD consists of a representative selection of hits for himself ("Crazy Mama" and "Lies" charted early in his career) and his partisans (Clapton scored with "Cocaine" and "After Midnight," while Lynyrd Skynyrd made "Call Me the Breeze" a concert staple). The case could easily be made that Cale deserves something a bit more ambitious than this unambiguous overview, but who's going to make the case for the man? Not low-profile J.J., that's for sure. --Steven Stolder

Wicked (2003 Original Broadway Cast)

Wicked (2003 Original Broadway Cast) Feature

  • Record Label: Decca
  • Country Of Release: USA
  • Year Of Release: 2003
  • Notes: Schwartz/Holzman

Wicked (2003 Original Broadway Cast) Overview

WICKED, STARRING KRISTIN CHENOWETH, IDINA MENZEL AND JOEL GREY. Decca Broadway proudly presents the original cast recording of WICKED, Broadway's most talked about new musical. The box office is already over Million! With a score by Stephen Schwartz (Broadway's Pippin, Godspell), libretto by Winnie Holzman (TV's My So-Called Life) and based on the best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire, the musical is a prequel to the legendary classic, THE WIZARD OF OZ. WICKED explores the early life of the witches of Oz: Glinda and Elphaba. One witch, born with emerald green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. WICKED stars Tony Award® winner Kristin Chenoweth (You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown) as Glinda, Idina Menzel (Rent) as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Tony® and Oscar® Winner Joel Grey (Cabaret) as The Wizard. The Original Cast Recording -- featuring an essay by Wicked novelist Gregory Maguire, original color photos from the show and a complete libretto.

Wicked (2003 Original Broadway Cast) Specifications

One of the most common complaints about musicals is that the books are flimsy pretexts from which to hang numbers. Wicked runs into the opposite problem: it has a great plot, but too often the songs just get in the way. Based on Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name, Wicked tells us what happened between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, before Dorothy showed up in Oz. And the show is lucky to boast a pair of ace leading women in the main roles. As Glinda, Kristin Chenoweth delivers a sensational star turn, displaying a crystal-pure voice and sharp comic timing; Idina Menzel lends her powerful pipes to the tricky role of Elphaba. Unfortunately, you wish they had better material to work with. Stephen Schwartz's pop score is often dragged down by overly synthetic orchestrations and sentimental lyrics (think Chicken Soup for the Witch). Still, at its best Wicked is a seductive slice of popular entertainment that could well give a younger audience a lasting taste for musical theater. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Bakersfield

Bakersfield Overview

MCA Recording and 20 Grammy Award-winning artist Vince Gill and famed steel guitarist, Paul Franklin, are proud to announce the release of Bakersfield on July 30 via MCA Nashville. Gill and Franklin pay tribute to the Bakersfield sound by performing songs from two of Bakersfield s sons; Buck Owens and Merle Haggard.

Gill and Franklin share the producing duties on the ten song set that makes up Bakersfield. Bakersfield was tracked in two days at Gill s home studio, backed by a stellar band made up of John Hobbs, piano; Greg Morrow, drums; Willie Weeks and Brad Albin, bass; J. T. Corenflos, electric rhythm guitar; and Time Jumpers Kenny Sears, Larry Franklin,Joe Spivey, fiddles and Dawn Sears on harmony vocals. Gill played all the acoustic and electric guitar fills and solos.

This is just as much a guitar record for me as it is a singing record, Gill says, But it was fun for me to sing a whole record of the greatest songs ever. I guess what I m real proud of is that when it s one of Buck s songs, I sing it very much in that vein. And the Haggard songs are very much in the vein he sang. With Buck s songs, you won t find much vibrato in my vocals, and with Merle s, it will come down to a low note and that quiver.

This may be Vince s greatest project, Franklin declares. What a showcase! I ve heard him sing for 30 years, but he sings licks on this record I never heard before.

Merle Haggard who writes the albums liner notes says Vince and Paul offer a great new touch on a great old sound. It was great, certainly to hear my music done with the great touch of Vince and Paul. I feel highly complimented. But it was especially great to hear what they did with Bucks stuff. Some may not notice, but I for one knew how great Buck really was, first as a musician, then as an artist.

The iconic singer/songwriter adds, I can only give the entire project a big ole double, thumbs up! Well done guys, the West Coast takes a bow.

"Electric is very much set on the dance floor," they said in a statement. "The album often evolves as a response to our previous album and, whereas Elysium had a reflective mood, Electric is pretty banging!" Producer Stuart Price said the album's sound was developed via "various techniques between old school synth and drum machine programming and new school computer mangling." Amelita

Amelita Overview

After releasing their self-titled debut, Court Yard Hounds, to much critical acclaim, Emily Robison and Martie Maguire are at it again. Containing 11 new tracks, Robison and Maguire took a different approach with Amelita than their debut album in 2010. This album contains a new perspective, which is due in part to time passed since Robison's divorce. "I've been freed of all of those time-heals-everything kind of things," says Emily Robison. "Now, I've opened up to other ideas and ways of looking at life and the world."

"I think it's not only a more hopeful album, but it's more … well fun," adds Robinson.

The new direction is apparent on title track "Amelita," which has a breezy south-of-the-border sound, or "Phoebe," which calls in a frenetic, anxious melody, and chillingly close harmonies. Lead single, "Sunshine," co-written by acclaimed singer/songwriter Jonatha Brooke along with Martin Strayer and Alex Dezen, oozes with irony as the girls flash their carefully manicured claws through silken harmonies.

Robison's vocals captivate listeners as she sings lead on most tracks, while Maguire co-wrote seven of the 11 songs on the album, penned "Road You Take" herself, and sings lead on "Guy Like You," which she wrote with guitarist Martin Strayer.

The girls teamed up with the same producer, Jim Scott, who they've had a true connection with since their first album. Surrounding themselves with Jim and guitarist Martin Strayer, who was also an integral part of the first album, the girls took a comfortable and pro-active approach to creating their music this time around. "I think we've approached it differently because we felt like okay, we are a band. We aren't just two ex-Dixie Chicks anymore, we're a band and we like our sound and we're going to continue to do this and hopefully get better at it, and share something new this time around," said Maguire.

The Court Yard Hounds' new album is a clear statement of who the girls are as artists, defining their sound as a band, with soaring songs that are personal, yet familiar and widely relatable.

Southeastern

Southeastern Overview

Southeastern, the new solo album from Jason Isbell, contains 12 new Isbell compositions and the most personal songs of self-reflection and discovery he has written to date. The lyrics of the beautiful and haunting opening track Cover Me Up, make it immediately apparent that Isbell is speaking from an entirely new viewpoint. The song features his strongest vocals to date, but also kicks the door to his soul wide open for all to see. Isbell struggled, fought his demons, and has remained sober for over a hear now. Also, he was recently married and has entered the next chapter of his life. However, Southeastern is not an album preaching sobriety, but a work of repentance, self-realization and most importantly, personal growth.

By no means is Southeastern a wholly solemn offering. Tracks such as Stockholm (with Kim Richey) and Traveling Alone (with Amanda Shires) offer laid back tempos and memorable choruses, while Flying Over Water and Super 8 are strong reminders of Isbell's deep roots in rock. The poetic and deeply intimate lyrics are the common thread that runs throughout the album, perhaps no better illustrated than on Live Oak.

- There's a man who walks beside me, he is who I used to be / and I wonder if she sees him and confuses him with me / and I wonder who she's pining for on nights I'm not around / could it be the man who did the things I'm living down. -

Gordon Lightfoot - Complete Greatest Hits Overview

The most comprehensive single-CD collection by this treasured troubadour. These 1965-1987 United Artists, Reprise and Warner Bros. tracks include his Top 10 hits Sundown; If You Could Read My Mind; The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald; Carefree Highway , and 14 more!

Gordon Lightfoot - Complete Greatest Hits Specifications

Though he rose from the ranks of journeyman '60s folksinger to become a potent and consistent '70s hit maker, Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot's stock in trade was as much hard-eyed, dispassionate observation as romance or poetic whimsy. Perhaps that's why his songs have been covered by everyone from Elvis (this set's "Early Morning Rain") to Dylan. If there's such a thing as an alpha-male folkie, Lightfoot certainly fits the bill. Spanning the tongue-in-cheek chauvinism of 1965's "For Lovin' Me" and the cheatin' ways of "Sundown" to more introspective fare like "If You Could Read My Mind" and "Beautiful," this 20-track collection presents a concise primer on Lightfoot's career and craft. After his career peaked with one of the most unlikely top five hits ever, the gloom-laden 1976 narrative "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," Lightfoot's production tailed off sharply, though this anthology's "Stay Loose" ('86) and "Restless" ('93) are testament to his enduring skills as a songwriter and performer. --Jerry McCulley

The Best of Bread

The Best of Bread Overview

Here are all their soft rock classics, finally on one CD: Make It with You; Baby I'm-A Want You; If; Everything I Own; Lost Without Your Love; It Don't Matter to Me; The Guitar Man , and 13 more!

The Best of Bread Specifications

If they are to believed, David Gates and the other members of Bread never intended to become the enduring icons of a subgenre they virtually invented: soft rock. Indeed, scattered throughout this expanded edition of a perennial bestselling catalog album are tuneful evidence of their original intent, as one band mate said, "to make the '60s last a little longer." But it's the familiar, largely Gates-penned and -sung hit singles that remain the band's legacy, from "Make It with You" through the reunited band's last hurrah, "Lost Without Your Love." Though they've become oft-mocked clichés, these are singles informed with a rare, often complex melodic sense, delivered with a deceptively breezy tone by one of pop's purest tenors. Gates and Bread clearly colored artists as diverse as '80s MOR icon Christopher Cross and nouveau singer-songwriter David Mead. --Jerry McCulley

Seesaw Feature

  • BONAMASSA JOE / HART BETH SEESAW

Seesaw Overview

Seesaw reunites force-of-nature blues-rock vocalist Beth Hart and guitar hero Joe Bonamassa for a second album of choice covers from various musical eras. As with their first outing, Don't Explain, the project is in collaboration with producer Kevin Shirley (Joe Bonamassa, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Black Crowes). Each of the three principals suggested and selected tracks for the 11-song set list, which mines soulful classics previously made famous by Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Donnie Hathaway, Lucinda Williams, Buddy Miles, Tina Turner, Slackwax, Melody Gardot, and Nina Simone.
The one-two punch of Hart's powerhouse vocals and Bonamassa s scorching solos both honors and reinvents the original recordings. They are backed by the same world class band that kept the grooves going on Don't Explain: Anton Fig (drums, percussion), Carmine Rojas (bass), Blondie Chaplin (rhythm guitar, backing vocals and percussion), Arlan Schierbaum (organ, piano). This time out, their mighty sound is augmented by a horn section, with Lee Thornburg on trumpets and trombones, and Ron Dziubla on saxophones.
For Hart and Bonamassa, making music together grew out of the friendship and mutual artistic appreciation they developed after crossing paths on the road numerous times, particularly on the festival circuit in Europe. Bonamassa wanted to do a project with her, and came up with the idea for a soul covers record. Shirley, who s produced 12 of Bonamassa's albums, was enthusiastic, and Bonamassa contacted Hart. The chemistry clicked, and Don't Explain was released in 2011, followed now by 2013 s Seesaw in between, both Hart and Bonamassa have toured, recorded solo albums, and reached new career highs.
Fittingly, Seesaw opens with a joyous horn reveille to kick off Them There Eyes, first a hit for Billie Holiday in 1939. Hart's version is flirtatious and sophisticated. The classic American songbook is tapped for other cuts on Seesaw, including the closing number, Strange Fruit, which strikes the album s most serious note, addressing racism, slavery, and lynching. Billie Holiday and Nina Simone both did great recordings, but Nina's is the one that Kevin had me listen to, says Hart. I don't have any personal relationship to slavery in my family, but I can at least sing it from a place of compassion. It was important to me to do this.
On Nutbush City Limits, first released in 1973, Hart wails with an intensity that would make Tina Turner proud. Kevin sprung it on me the last day of recording. I remembered that in What's Love Got To Do With It, Ike is being abusive to Tina, telling her to sing it like a man, to sing it hard. I adore Tina, and this was a big challenge. It ended up feeling incredible to sing, and the band killed it. Equally fierce is Hart's vocal and Bonamassa's blistering solo on Miss Lady, the Buddy Miles song originally produced by Jimi Hendrix. Kevin played it for me when we did Don t Explain, and I didn't want to do it. He suggested it again this time, and I still didn t want to do it. It wasn't that I didn't think it was a great song, it was just so vocally demanding, she says. At the end of a long day, he said, Let's do a quick pass. My throat was so tired, I just screamed it out, and he kept it. It was a nice surprise.
