Vapor Trails (Remixed)

Vapor Trails (Remixed) Overview

This year's celebration of Rush continues with the highly anticipated release of a remixed version of the band 2002's album VAPOR TRAILS. In 2009, two tracks from VAPOR TRAILS ("One Little Victory" and "Earthshine") were remixed for the Retrospective III collection, setting fans into a frenzy in anticipation of a possible remixed version of the entire album being released one day. Four years later, that day is finally approaching.

"Vapor Trails was an album made under difficult and emotional circumstances - sort of like Rush learning how to be Rush again - and as a result, mistakes were made that we have longed to correct. David Bottrill's remixes have finally brought some justice and clarity to this deserving body of our work," says Geddy Lee.

"Every song has been given a new life, from the fire of 'One Little Victory,' 'Secret Touch,' and 'Ceiling Unlimited' to the melodic musicality of 'Sweet Miracle' and 'How It Is'… these songs have been redeemed. Thank you David!"

The remixed version of VAPOR TRAILS will also be included in the new 7-disc boxed set THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1989-2007, which features every studio album Rush recorded for Atlantic Records. The collection includes the Gold & Platinum albums Presto (1989), Roll The Bones (1991), Counterparts (1993), and Test For Echo (1996), as well as their covers EP Feedback (2004) and the Billboard Top 5 album Snakes & Arrows (2007). THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1989-2007 features each album presented in a wallet sleeve that faithfully reproduces the original artwork (except for VAPOR TRAILS, which features a reinterpreted version of the original cover) and is available on October 1st from Atlantic/Rhino.

Invisible Empire/Crescent Moon

Invisible Empire/Crescent Moon Overview

KT s fourth studio album overall, Invisible Empire/Crescent Moon, is her first to be released on Blue Note.

KT describes the album as full of songs from the heart, adding I followed my path of truth and ended up in a different place.

IECM is made up from two sessions with a season in between them, and KT saw the work as naturally separated into two distinct parts - an 'A' side and a 'B' side. The first batch sees songs like the exquisite Made Of Glass and Yellow Flower focusing on the themes of mortality, a subject close to her heart following the passing away of her father last year. The second batch evokes an ethereal mood, more reflective of deeply felt changes in outlook and shifts in her personal life. Together they add up to KT's most cohesive and affecting album to date.

Elvis At Stax: Deluxe Edition (3CD)

Elvis At Stax: Deluxe Edition (3CD) Overview

ELVIS AT STAX: DELUXE EDITON chronicles the 40th Anniversary of Elvis' historic hometown studio sessions of July and December 1973.

Deluxe 3-CD Box Set marks the first gathering of 28 masters and 27 outtakes in one comprehensive package.

The last major studio sessions in the career of Elvis Presley have finally been gathered together for the first time in one comprehensive package, as ELVIS AT STAX: DELUXE EDITION. The deluxe 3-CD box set, a 40th anniversary chronicle of a dozen nights that Presley spent at Stax Recording Studios in his hometown of Memphis in July and December 1973.

ELVIS AT STAX: DELUXE EDITION bristles with energy and dynamism. The proof is in the six consecutive singles that the Stax sessions produced, all of which skirted the Top 40 from 1973 to 1975. In effect, they rivaled some of the hottest streaks that Presley had charted a decade earlier.

The Stax singles still resonate today:
"Raised On Rock" b/w "For Ol' Time Sake" (Hot 100 #41, country #42);
"I've Got A Thing About You Baby" b/w "Take Good Care Of Her" (Hot 100 #39, country #4);
"Promised Land" b/w "It's Midnight" (Hot 100 #14, country #9);
"If You Talk In Your Sleep" b/w "Help Me" (Hot 100 #17, country #6);
"My Boy" b/w Thinking About You (Hot 100 #20, country #14); and
"Mr. Songman" (B-side of "T-R-O-U-B-L-E," Hot 100 #35, country #11).

Yeezus

Yeezus Overview

This album has a long list of collaborators: Daft Punk, Hudson Mohawke, RZA, Chief Keef, King L, Justin Vernon, Travis Scott and Charlie Wilson all chipped in, and Rick Rubin showed up late in the game and got an executive producer credit. Full of rattling 808s, electro clatter, waves of fuzz and heart-racing BPMs. 'On Site', its high-voltage sequence of insistent electronic bleeps and blips interspersed with samples of what sounds like slow-motion epic classic rock songs. The heavy drum rumble of 'Black Skinhead', interspersed with yelps and shouts, West raps in an increasingly frantic manner, building into a climax that the Prodigy would be proud of "I Am a God". The drum-less barrage of brooding synths, booming pitched-down vocals and smoke-gray reverb sounds like something out of a boss level in Assassin's Creed. "New Slaves" is still as electric as the day it was premiered on the sides of buildings across the globe, a snarling indictment of America's interwoven legacies of consumerism, racism and mass incarceration.

Crash My Party

Crash My Party Overview

I decided Crash My Party was perfect for this album because like the song, the album goes beyond the literal meaning of the title, says Bryan. The song isn't what you think it is, it is unexpected, and I think in the same way fans will definitely hear some surprises on my new album. It still reflects my sound but you will get to hear a little bit deeper, different side to me musically as well.

Crash My Party is the follow-up to Luke s most successful album to date tailgates & tanlines, which has now been certified Double Platinum. tailgates & tanlines contains three back-to-back Platinum singles, was the 8th best-selling album of 2012 and has sold 7.2 million tracks. Crash My Party also releases on the heels of Luke s most successful spring break series album, Spring Break...Here To Party, which debuted at #1 on Billboard s Top 200 chart and is certified Gold.

The RCA Albums Collection

The RCA Albums Collection Overview

The profound musical gifts of Harry Nilsson, an artist whose fans ranged from all four Beatles to the Monkees, Randy Newman, Keith Moon, Jimmy Webb, and dozens more, are on full display in THE RCA ALBUMS COLLECTION.

THE RCA ALBUMS COLLECTION will be a must-have for Nilsson devotees, and a seductive lure for those whose awareness is limited to his Grammy Award®-winning versions of Badfinger's "Without You" (#1) and Fred Neil's "Everybody s Talkin'" (a #6 hit from the soundtrack to Midnight Cowboy, 1969). Then there are the notable covers of his own songs by Three Dog Night ("One"), the Monkees ("Cuddly Toy"), the Yardbirds ("Ten Little Indians"), and Blood, Sweat & Tears ("Without Her"). Others will recall the duo of hits that appeared alongside "Without You" on 1971's Nilsson Schmilsson album, "Coconut" (#8) and "Jump Into The Fire." Finally, the playful "Me And My Arrow" (from the soundtrack of his animated film The Point!) and "Girlfriend" (theme of the early '70s sitcom The Courtship Of Eddie's Father) have their own coterie of admirers.

THE RCA ALBUMS COLLECTION presents the definitive 14 albums in Nilsson's RCA Records U.S. discography, from his 1967 debut Pandemonium Shadow Show (among whose high points are his takes on the Beatles' "You Can't Do That" and "She's Leaving Home") to his final album for the label in 1977, Knnillssonn. Bonus material on those albums add up to 65 tracks, of which 26 are previously unreleased. Adding to the box set's historical provenance are three newly-compiled CDs, Nilsson Sessions 1967-1968, Nilsson Sessions 1968-1971, and Nilsson Sessions 1971-1974, containing a total of 58 tracks, exactly half of which (29 tracks) are previously unreleased.

RCA Studios was Harry's professional playground from 1967 to 1977. He spent countless hours sketching, experimenting and composing songs within the confines of 6363 Sunset Blvd., right in the heart of Hollywood. Sessions Schmessions features a sampling of those dates culled from Harry's first two years at RCA. There are 14 previously unreleased tracks with Highlights include five demos taped for The Monkees("1941," "World" "Signs," "Cuddly Toy" and "This Could Be The Night") in March 1967, as well as three outtakes from his RCA debut album, Pandemonium Shadow Show ("As I Wander Lonely," "Butters Lament" and an astonishing "The Family"). Sessions for Aerial Ballet orphaned early takes of such classics as "One," "Together," "Bath" and "I Said Goodbye To Me." Additionally, Harry's cover of the Coasters classic "Searchin'" was left on the cutting room floor, as was his attempt the Addrisi Brothers' "She's Just Laughing At Me" and Procol Harum's "She Wandered Through The Garden Fence." The Very Best of J. J. Cale (The Definitive Collection)

The Very Best of J. J. Cale (The Definitive Collection) Feature

  • Record Label: Mercury
  • Catalog#: 07314 5347542
  • Country Of Release: NLD
  • Year Of Release: 2001
  • Notes: 1971-1983

The Very Best of J. J. Cale (The Definitive Collection) Overview

A full 20 favorites from this institution of a singer-songwriter, whose songs have been borrowed by Clapton, Santana, Skynyrd and so many others. You get Cocaine; After Midnight; I'll Make Love to You Anytime; Call Me the Breeze; Sensitive Kind; Lies; Magnolia; Crazy Mama; Cajun Moon , and more!

The Very Best of J. J. Cale (The Definitive Collection) Specifications

As best-of collections go, this one is uncommonly understated. Which is probably appropriate given that the singer/songwriter it celebrates is one of the most taciturn rock & rollers to ever saunter down a dusty road. Decades into a career that has produced more commercial success than one might suppose, Cale's Very Best consists of one disc; outtakes and rarities padding a second disc don't fit Cale's less-is-more aesthetic. There's no essay elevating the Oklahoman as a great blues-rock pathfinder, though Eric Clapton and Dire Straits are among the platinum performers who owe him a debt; just musician credits and a modest dedication from Cale adorn the booklet. (Hey, at least the camera-shy Cale sat still for a photo shoot!) As for the music, this 20-song CD consists of a representative selection of hits for himself ("Crazy Mama" and "Lies" charted early in his career) and his partisans (Clapton scored with "Cocaine" and "After Midnight," while Lynyrd Skynyrd made "Call Me the Breeze" a concert staple). The case could easily be made that Cale deserves something a bit more ambitious than this unambiguous overview, but who's going to make the case for the man? Not low-profile J.J., that's for sure. --Steven Stolder

Wicked (2003 Original Broadway Cast)

Wicked (2003 Original Broadway Cast) Feature

  • Record Label: Decca
  • Country Of Release: USA
  • Year Of Release: 2003
  • Notes: Schwartz/Holzman

Wicked (2003 Original Broadway Cast) Overview

WICKED, STARRING KRISTIN CHENOWETH, IDINA MENZEL AND JOEL GREY. Decca Broadway proudly presents the original cast recording of WICKED, Broadway's most talked about new musical. The box office is already over Million! With a score by Stephen Schwartz (Broadway's Pippin, Godspell), libretto by Winnie Holzman (TV's My So-Called Life) and based on the best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire, the musical is a prequel to the legendary classic, THE WIZARD OF OZ. WICKED explores the early life of the witches of Oz: Glinda and Elphaba. One witch, born with emerald green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. WICKED stars Tony Award® winner Kristin Chenoweth (You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown) as Glinda, Idina Menzel (Rent) as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Tony® and Oscar® Winner Joel Grey (Cabaret) as The Wizard. The Original Cast Recording -- featuring an essay by Wicked novelist Gregory Maguire, original color photos from the show and a complete libretto.

Wicked (2003 Original Broadway Cast) Specifications

One of the most common complaints about musicals is that the books are flimsy pretexts from which to hang numbers. Wicked runs into the opposite problem: it has a great plot, but too often the songs just get in the way. Based on Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name, Wicked tells us what happened between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, before Dorothy showed up in Oz. And the show is lucky to boast a pair of ace leading women in the main roles. As Glinda, Kristin Chenoweth delivers a sensational star turn, displaying a crystal-pure voice and sharp comic timing; Idina Menzel lends her powerful pipes to the tricky role of Elphaba. Unfortunately, you wish they had better material to work with. Stephen Schwartz's pop score is often dragged down by overly synthetic orchestrations and sentimental lyrics (think Chicken Soup for the Witch). Still, at its best Wicked is a seductive slice of popular entertainment that could well give a younger audience a lasting taste for musical theater. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Bakersfield

Bakersfield Overview

MCA Recording and 20 Grammy Award-winning artist Vince Gill and famed steel guitarist, Paul Franklin, are proud to announce the release of Bakersfield on July 30 via MCA Nashville. Gill and Franklin pay tribute to the Bakersfield sound by performing songs from two of Bakersfield s sons; Buck Owens and Merle Haggard.

Gill and Franklin share the producing duties on the ten song set that makes up Bakersfield. Bakersfield was tracked in two days at Gill s home studio, backed by a stellar band made up of John Hobbs, piano; Greg Morrow, drums; Willie Weeks and Brad Albin, bass; J. T. Corenflos, electric rhythm guitar; and Time Jumpers Kenny Sears, Larry Franklin,Joe Spivey, fiddles and Dawn Sears on harmony vocals. Gill played all the acoustic and electric guitar fills and solos.

This is just as much a guitar record for me as it is a singing record, Gill says, But it was fun for me to sing a whole record of the greatest songs ever. I guess what I m real proud of is that when it s one of Buck s songs, I sing it very much in that vein. And the Haggard songs are very much in the vein he sang. With Buck s songs, you won t find much vibrato in my vocals, and with Merle s, it will come down to a low note and that quiver.

This may be Vince s greatest project, Franklin declares. What a showcase! I ve heard him sing for 30 years, but he sings licks on this record I never heard before.

Merle Haggard who writes the albums liner notes says Vince and Paul offer a great new touch on a great old sound. It was great, certainly to hear my music done with the great touch of Vince and Paul. I feel highly complimented. But it was especially great to hear what they did with Bucks stuff. Some may not notice, but I for one knew how great Buck really was, first as a musician, then as an artist.

The iconic singer/songwriter adds, I can only give the entire project a big ole double, thumbs up! Well done guys, the West Coast takes a bow.

Stuart Price, best known for his work with Madonna and The Killers, produced the album, which band members Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe call "banging." "Electric is very much set on the dance floor," they said in a statement. "The album often evolves as a response to our previous album and, whereas Elysium had a reflective mood, Electric is pretty banging!" Producer Stuart Price said the album's sound was developed via "various techniques between old school synth and drum machine programming and new school computer mangling." Amelita

Amelita Overview

After releasing their self-titled debut, Court Yard Hounds, to much critical acclaim, Emily Robison and Martie Maguire are at it again. Containing 11 new tracks, Robison and Maguire took a different approach with Amelita than their debut album in 2010. This album contains a new perspective, which is due in part to time passed since Robison's divorce. "I've been freed of all of those time-heals-everything kind of things," says Emily Robison. "Now, I've opened up to other ideas and ways of looking at life and the world."

"I think it's not only a more hopeful album, but it's more … well fun," adds Robinson.

The new direction is apparent on title track "Amelita," which has a breezy south-of-the-border sound, or "Phoebe," which calls in a frenetic, anxious melody, and chillingly close harmonies. Lead single, "Sunshine," co-written by acclaimed singer/songwriter Jonatha Brooke along with Martin Strayer and Alex Dezen, oozes with irony as the girls flash their carefully manicured claws through silken harmonies.

Robison's vocals captivate listeners as she sings lead on most tracks, while Maguire co-wrote seven of the 11 songs on the album, penned "Road You Take" herself, and sings lead on "Guy Like You," which she wrote with guitarist Martin Strayer.

The girls teamed up with the same producer, Jim Scott, who they've had a true connection with since their first album. Surrounding themselves with Jim and guitarist Martin Strayer, who was also an integral part of the first album, the girls took a comfortable and pro-active approach to creating their music this time around. "I think we've approached it differently because we felt like okay, we are a band. We aren't just two ex-Dixie Chicks anymore, we're a band and we like our sound and we're going to continue to do this and hopefully get better at it, and share something new this time around," said Maguire.

The Court Yard Hounds' new album is a clear statement of who the girls are as artists, defining their sound as a band, with soaring songs that are personal, yet familiar and widely relatable.

Southeastern

Southeastern Overview

Southeastern, the new solo album from Jason Isbell, contains 12 new Isbell compositions and the most personal songs of self-reflection and discovery he has written to date. The lyrics of the beautiful and haunting opening track Cover Me Up, make it immediately apparent that Isbell is speaking from an entirely new viewpoint. The song features his strongest vocals to date, but also kicks the door to his soul wide open for all to see. Isbell struggled, fought his demons, and has remained sober for over a hear now. Also, he was recently married and has entered the next chapter of his life. However, Southeastern is not an album preaching sobriety, but a work of repentance, self-realization and most importantly, personal growth.

By no means is Southeastern a wholly solemn offering. Tracks such as Stockholm (with Kim Richey) and Traveling Alone (with Amanda Shires) offer laid back tempos and memorable choruses, while Flying Over Water and Super 8 are strong reminders of Isbell's deep roots in rock. The poetic and deeply intimate lyrics are the common thread that runs throughout the album, perhaps no better illustrated than on Live Oak.

- There's a man who walks beside me, he is who I used to be / and I wonder if she sees him and confuses him with me / and I wonder who she's pining for on nights I'm not around / could it be the man who did the things I'm living down. -

Natalie Cole En EspaƱol

Natalie Cole En EspaƱol Overview

2013 release from the Pop/Soul vocalist. Yes--or in this case, s¡--Natalie Cole's first album in Spanish includes a duet with her late father. And like "Unforgettable," the song that won a Grammy Award in 1992 and foreshadowed today's holographic performance trend, the black-tie rumba "Acercate Mas" ("Come Closer to Me") will pluck at heartstrings and transport fans of Nat King Cole-in this case to '50s Havana, where he learned to sound out the lyrics for Cole Espa¤ol, the first of his three Spanish recordings. Natalie Cole en Espa¤ol features some of the same numbers covered on those historic albums, and other romantic evergreens familiar to international audiences. Andrea Bocelli joins Cole on "Besame Mucho." Produced by Latin hitmaker Rudy Perez, the set also includes contemporary classics: Juan Luis Guerra's enduring '90s hit "Bachata Rosa"-featuring the superstar Dominican artist-and "Oye Como Va."

Gordon Lightfoot - Complete Greatest Hits

Gordon Lightfoot - Complete Greatest Hits Feature

  • Record Label: Rhino
  • Catalog#: 8122782872
  • Country Of Release: NLD
  • Year Of Release: 2002

Gordon Lightfoot - Complete Greatest Hits Overview

The most comprehensive single-CD collection by this treasured troubadour. These 1965-1987 United Artists, Reprise and Warner Bros. tracks include his Top 10 hits Sundown; If You Could Read My Mind; The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald; Carefree Highway , and 14 more!

Gordon Lightfoot - Complete Greatest Hits Specifications

Though he rose from the ranks of journeyman '60s folksinger to become a potent and consistent '70s hit maker, Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot's stock in trade was as much hard-eyed, dispassionate observation as romance or poetic whimsy. Perhaps that's why his songs have been covered by everyone from Elvis (this set's "Early Morning Rain") to Dylan. If there's such a thing as an alpha-male folkie, Lightfoot certainly fits the bill. Spanning the tongue-in-cheek chauvinism of 1965's "For Lovin' Me" and the cheatin' ways of "Sundown" to more introspective fare like "If You Could Read My Mind" and "Beautiful," this 20-track collection presents a concise primer on Lightfoot's career and craft. After his career peaked with one of the most unlikely top five hits ever, the gloom-laden 1976 narrative "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," Lightfoot's production tailed off sharply, though this anthology's "Stay Loose" ('86) and "Restless" ('93) are testament to his enduring skills as a songwriter and performer. --Jerry McCulley

The Best of Bread

The Best of Bread Overview

Here are all their soft rock classics, finally on one CD: Make It with You; Baby I'm-A Want You; If; Everything I Own; Lost Without Your Love; It Don't Matter to Me; The Guitar Man , and 13 more!

The Best of Bread Specifications

If they are to believed, David Gates and the other members of Bread never intended to become the enduring icons of a subgenre they virtually invented: soft rock. Indeed, scattered throughout this expanded edition of a perennial bestselling catalog album are tuneful evidence of their original intent, as one band mate said, "to make the '60s last a little longer." But it's the familiar, largely Gates-penned and -sung hit singles that remain the band's legacy, from "Make It with You" through the reunited band's last hurrah, "Lost Without Your Love." Though they've become oft-mocked clichƩs, these are singles informed with a rare, often complex melodic sense, delivered with a deceptively breezy tone by one of pop's purest tenors. Gates and Bread clearly colored artists as diverse as '80s MOR icon Christopher Cross and nouveau singer-songwriter David Mead. --Jerry McCulley

Seesaw

Seesaw Feature

  • BONAMASSA JOE / HART BETH SEESAW

Seesaw Overview

Seesaw reunites force-of-nature blues-rock vocalist Beth Hart and guitar hero Joe Bonamassa for a second album of choice covers from various musical eras. As with their first outing, Don't Explain, the project is in collaboration with producer Kevin Shirley (Joe Bonamassa, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Black Crowes). Each of the three principals suggested and selected tracks for the 11-song set list, which mines soulful classics previously made famous by Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Donnie Hathaway, Lucinda Williams, Buddy Miles, Tina Turner, Slackwax, Melody Gardot, and Nina Simone.
The one-two punch of Hart's powerhouse vocals and Bonamassa s scorching solos both honors and reinvents the original recordings. They are backed by the same world class band that kept the grooves going on Don't Explain: Anton Fig (drums, percussion), Carmine Rojas (bass), Blondie Chaplin (rhythm guitar, backing vocals and percussion), Arlan Schierbaum (organ, piano). This time out, their mighty sound is augmented by a horn section, with Lee Thornburg on trumpets and trombones, and Ron Dziubla on saxophones.
For Hart and Bonamassa, making music together grew out of the friendship and mutual artistic appreciation they developed after crossing paths on the road numerous times, particularly on the festival circuit in Europe. Bonamassa wanted to do a project with her, and came up with the idea for a soul covers record. Shirley, who s produced 12 of Bonamassa's albums, was enthusiastic, and Bonamassa contacted Hart. The chemistry clicked, and Don't Explain was released in 2011, followed now by 2013 s Seesaw in between, both Hart and Bonamassa have toured, recorded solo albums, and reached new career highs.
Fittingly, Seesaw opens with a joyous horn reveille to kick off Them There Eyes, first a hit for Billie Holiday in 1939. Hart's version is flirtatious and sophisticated. The classic American songbook is tapped for other cuts on Seesaw, including the closing number, Strange Fruit, which strikes the album s most serious note, addressing racism, slavery, and lynching. Billie Holiday and Nina Simone both did great recordings, but Nina's is the one that Kevin had me listen to, says Hart. I don't have any personal relationship to slavery in my family, but I can at least sing it from a place of compassion. It was important to me to do this.
On Nutbush City Limits, first released in 1973, Hart wails with an intensity that would make Tina Turner proud. Kevin sprung it on me the last day of recording. I remembered that in What's Love Got To Do With It, Ike is being abusive to Tina, telling her to sing it like a man, to sing it hard. I adore Tina, and this was a big challenge. It ended up feeling incredible to sing, and the band killed it. Equally fierce is Hart's vocal and Bonamassa's blistering solo on Miss Lady, the Buddy Miles song originally produced by Jimi Hendrix. Kevin played it for me when we did Don t Explain, and I didn't want to do it. He suggested it again this time, and I still didn t want to do it. It wasn't that I didn't think it was a great song, it was just so vocally demanding, she says. At the end of a long day, he said, Let's do a quick pass. My throat was so tired, I just screamed it out, and he kept it. It was a nice surprise.

Every Man Should Know

Every Man Should Know Overview

Harry Connick, Jr. has built a reputation for musical and emotional honesty. Never one to rest on his ever-growing list of laurels, Connick exposes his feelings as never before on Every Man Should Know. The new CD contains twelve original songs for which Connick wrote music, lyrics and arrangements.

"No rules, no limits," is how the multi-talented artist describes the songs in his liner notes for the new collection. "I don t recall ever reaching quite as deeply or confidently into my inhibition pool."

The title track is indicative of how anecdote and imagination yield inspired results. "I was building a workbench with a carpenter friend," Connick explains, "and my lack of any knowledge about carpentry left me feeling so inadequate. It led me to think about other things that every man should know, like how to change a tire. Then I began thinking about what everybody should know how to do, and that's to love."

"'Come See About Me' is a song about a guy who's heartbroken that was inspired by a line Kim Burrell sang on 'All These People' [a song about the abandoned Katrina victims from Connick's 2007 CD Oh, My NOLA]. It was tough for me to sing, because the thought of watching the one you love move on is so painful. Just the idea of it hurts, and it took me a few tries just to figure out how to sing it."

More immediately personal feelings underscore "The Greatest Love Story," a song for Connick's wife Jill that includes both "inside" allusions ("Jill's from Texas, which is why the pedal steel guitar is in there") and a direct reference to Connick's late mother Anita.

Connick is quick to credit his collaborators, including guest soloists Branford Marsalis (whose soprano sax enriches "Let Me Stay") and Wynton Marsalis (extending the reflective mood of "Being Alone" with his trumpet) and longtime Band regulars Jerry Weldon on tenor sax and old friend Jonathan DuBose, Jr. on guitar on "I Love Her." He gives special credit to guitarist Brian Sutton and the Nashville musicians assembled for several tracks. "Those Nashville guys are deep," Connick marvels. "Before they play a note, they ask, 'What are we playing about?' And they like to play with you when you sing rather than laying down tracks before you sing, because they want to understand the sentiment of each song. They really helped me capture 'Love My Life Away,' a song about a guy dying from a disease who is facing the plodding nature of his life."

The range of these songs is vast, touching upon love and loss, celebration and sorrow, tragedy and hope. With Every Man Should Know, Harry Connick, Jr. triumphs once again, with a depth of feeling that signals another milestone for one of the music world s most multi-faceted artists.
