The Italian Tenor

The Italian Tenor Overview

Vittorio Grigolo purposely waited to record his first operatic solo album until he had something unique to communicate in the repertoire and has chosen arias representing the culture I come from. THE ITALIAN TENOR presents music from three giants of the lyric stage Gaetano Donizetti, Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini and combines famous arias with lesser-known discoveries. The album was recorded in the Teatro, Regio di Parma with the resident orchestra and conductor Pier Giorgio Morandi.

Donizetti's Una furtiva lagrima (L'Elisir d'Amore) has been a litmus test of the Italian tenor since the days of Enrico Caruso, whose famous performance of the aria paved the way for the opera's return to the repertoire after years of neglect. Equally beautiful is Spirto gentil (La Favorita) in which the lead character laments the loss of his love forever.

The disc presents Vittorio as five Verdi characters. His selection begins with Quando le sere al placido from Luisa Miller and continues with Ella mi fu rapita and Possente amore from Rigoletto. Verdi s early opera Il Corsaro is rarely performed on stage today, but the young tenor triumphed in the title role at the Zürich Opernhaus earlier this year. The arias Tutto parea sorridere and Si de Corsari il fulmine give him ample opportunity to demonstrate his lyric and dramatic gifts, as does the one chosen aria from Un Ballo in Maschera, the introspective Forse le soglia attinse....ma se m'e forza perderti . Following the cavatina Ah si ben mio coll essere , Vittorio makes a rare venture into the spinto tenor repertoire with Di quella pira (Il Trovatore).

The Puccini selection features a seldom heard aria from the composer's first opera, Le Villi, Ecco la casa...torna ai felici di . Vittorio was drawn to the unusually dark, almost Wagnerian colours of the piece. Donna non vidi mai (Manon Lescaut), sung at the beginning of the opera as des Grieux falls in love with the young Manon, provides a clear contrast to the despair of Cavaradossi in E lucevan le stelle (Tosca) as the painter awaits his execution. The aria Firenze è come un albero fiorito from Puccini's only comic opera, Gianni Schicchi, foreshadows the melody of the celebrated O mio babbino caro in its central section. Of course, no survey of the Italian tenor repertoire would be complete without the best-loved aria of them all - Che gelida manina (La Bohème).

Experience Hendrix: The Best Of Jimi Hendrix Specifications

Experience Hendrix brings together the major singles with a stack of majestic album tracks and the career-defining live Woodstock version of "The Star Spangled Banner" on a fat 20-tracker. While best used as a sampler to direct new listeners to the immortal Are You Experienced, Electric Ladyland, and so on, the CD (which supplants the short-lived Ultimate Experience collection) does hang together as a listen. Its blend of Hendrix the rocker and Hendrix the underrated soul man is suggestive, painting a picture of a multifaceted genius and transcending its plainly mercenary origins. In the end, its effect--like that of all Hendrix's best records--is to remind us of a Jimi very, very much alive. --Rickey Wright

The Party Ain't Over

The Party Ain't Over Overview

"It's an exciting time to be Wanda Jackson," Austin's American-Statesman declared in October on the eve of Jackson's 73rd birthday bash at the Continental Club there. The undisputed Queen of Rockabilly - a touring powerhouse for more than 50 years - is releasing her debut disc for Third Man/Nonesuch Records, the aptly titled The Party Ain't Over.

This collection of vintage and contemporary covers was produced by fan and new-found friend Jack White at his Nashville studio and recorded with a late-night honky-tonk feel by members of My Morning Jacket, the Raconteurs, and Dead Weather, among others. The White-curated lineup of tunes, says Jackson, showcases "all the various types of music that I've done through the years-some country, some gospel, some rockabilly, some rock n' roll. It's got all of that, and we threw in a Bob Dylan song 'Thunder On the Mountain,' just to be safe."

The spirited Jackson, revered for such classic singles as "Let's Have a Party" and "Fujiyama Mama," proves that brash rock and roll attitude need not have an age limit. Her trademark growl remains intact on rockers like "Rip It Up" and "Nervous Breakdown"; she opens the set with an echo-laden sneer on a rollicking version of "Shakin' All Over" and ends it 10 songs later with a plaintive take on Jimmie Rodgers' "Yodel #6." Along the way she tackles the Andrew Sisters kitschy "Rum and Coca Cola" and a big-band rendition of the DeCastro Sisters' "Teach Me Tonight," and she out-sasses-and out-classes-Amy Winehouse on a cover of the British bad girl's "You Know I'm No Good," which has already been released as a single.

The debut release by Orange County, California's Sublime is a positively infectious record that marries varied styles of dub, reggae, rap, sampling, scratching, and badass dancehall ska with old-school punk overtones. De Stijl

    De Stijl Overview

2008 reissue of cult classic De Stijl is White Stripes 's second album released in 2000 and it was recorded on an 8-track analog tape in Jack's living room. The album title De Stijl is a Dutch artistic movement founded in 1917. Proponents of De Stijl sought to express a new utopian ideal of spiritual harmony and order through pure abstraction and universality by a reduction to the essentials of form and colour with simplified visual compositions to the vertical and horizontal directions, using only primary colors with black and white. This simplistic color continuity is evident on the White Stripes album covers. 13 tracks.

Car Wheels on a Gravel Road

Car Wheels on a Gravel Road Overview

Six years in the making, Car Wheels somehow lives up to its lofty expectations because of Williams's direct songwriting and her wonderfully unaffected vocals. With assistance from cohorts such as Steve Earle, Williams uses the acoustic accents of Dobros, mandolins, slide guitars, and accordions to add color to her grooves, whispers, and rumbles. Her lyrics are undisguised as she presents to us the travelogue of her memory. We can't wait for 2004! --Marc Greilsamer

Car Wheels on a Gravel Road Specifications

Lucinda Williams makes this whole music thing seem so simple: Write in plain language about the people and places that crowd your memory; add subtle flavors of a mandolin here, a Dobro there, perhaps an accordion or slide guitar; above all, sing as honestly and naturally as you can. Of course, it took her six years to achieve this simplicity, an amazing achievement considering the number of knobs that were turned. Her exquisite voice moans and groans and slips and slides--she delivers a polished tone in a coarse manner. On the superb "Concrete and Barbed Wire," soft acoustic guitars are punctuated by electric slide, accordion, mandolin, and Steve Earle's harmony. Williams's deeply personal stories are matched with bluesy rumbles, raunchy grooves, and plaintive whispers. The entire Deep South is reduced to a sleepy small town filled with ex-lovers, dive bars, and endless gravel roads. --Marc Greilsamer

Get Rich Or Die Tryin Overview

Australian pressing (identical to U.S.) of his smash hit 2003 album features three hidden bonus tracks, 'Wanksta' (from his currently unavailable album, 'No Mercy, No Fear'), 'U Not Like Me' (from his 'Guess Who's Back?' album) & 'Life's On The Line' (from his deleted EP, 'Power Of The Dollar'). Universal.

Get Rich Or Die Tryin Specifications

He’s been shot nine times. Incarcerated. And stabbed up and down. And that’s only what’s happened on 50 Cent’s down time. Hands down, 50 Cent is the biggest buzz emcee since Eminem (who just happens to be his label CEO), and Get Rich also features Dr. Dre on production, so it’s a can’t-miss record, right? Well, mostly. Get Rich is not filled with midtempo, radio-friendly numbers like "Wanksta," his thinly veiled Ja Rule dis first heard on the 8 Mile soundtrack. Instead, Cent brings the heat, not heater. He sheds his inner thug on "21 Questions," featuring G-funk crooner Nate Dogg showing some semblance of respect to the hotties, and then reverts right back to his thug persona on "In da Club," where he boasts "I’m into having sex, I ain’t into making love." There’s no "How to Rob, Pt. 2" here, although "Many Men" comes close, as he addresses some of the haters who may not fully get why he’s now rap’s big cheese. Surprisingly, the two Eminem-produced joints--"Patiently Waiting" (which thematically is very much like Em’s "Lose Yourself"), and "Don’t Push Me"--almost rival the beats supplied by Dre. Then again, it seems his most well-known cuts ("High All the Time" and "Wanksta," for example) are actually some of the weakest of the lot. Sure, Get Rich could never have lived up to the hype, it’s nowhere near Biggie's Ready to Die or Nas's Illmatic, but there's no fast-forward material here, a near miracle in these times. --Dalton Higgins

    Korn

    Korn Overview

Grammy winning rock band Korn has sold more than 30 million albums and received widespread critical acclaim for its music. Korn has redefined the parameters of heavy music, revolutionizing the genre be matching unsettling guitar textures and volcanic rhythms with jagged, introspective lyrics and intense vocals. Korn is known for its extensive live touring schedule and riveting live performances.

    Korn Specifications

Combining the stop-start rhythms of Helmet, the hip-hop assault of Rage Against the Machine and the brooding vocals of Faith No More, Bakersfield, California band Korn concocted a golden formula that would reanimate the dormant corpse of heavy metal. The band's self-titled debut is a teenage-fantasy-endorphin-rush--a subversive noisefest as angry and hostile as Slayer but with a propulsive groove perfect for skateboarding, vandalism, or jumping up and down until you're nauseous. Songs like "Blind," "Clown," and "Shoots and Ladders" blend dark, bleak riffs with head-spinning guitar effects and scream-and-response choruses. But even at their most vitriolic, Korn imbue their blustery music with a cathartic element of fun. --Jon Wiederhorn

I Love Being Here With You: A Jazz Piano Tribute to Peggy Lee

I Love Being Here With You: A Jazz Piano Tribute to Peggy Lee Overview

"One of my favorite memories from my childhood is listening to my parents' favorite recordings and watching them dance on the kitchen floor. I heard Peggy Lee on my mother's phonograph when she was with Benny Goodman, and then with Dave Barbour, and I always knew she was special. I followed her career throughout my college and professional years, and I kept learning more and more. There was Peggy Lee the songwriter, raising the bar very high for future singer-songwriters. There was the Oscarnominated actress, playing the sad and wonderful Rose in "PETE KELLY'S BLUES", swinging hard with "Sugar" one minute, then breaking our hearts with "He Needs Me", about love that never was. There was Peg, the Veronica Lake-styled Cocker Spaniel, singing "He's A Tramp", from "THE LADY AND THE TRAMP", for which she wrote several tunes. And always the pivotal albums, lots of hits and lots of success, but each time breaking boundaries, like "Black Coffee", which proved to everyone that she was one of the great jazz singers. Then there was the superb "Beauty And The Beat", recorded live in Miami with the electrifying George Shearing Quintet, possibly the most descriptive collection of songs that say "Peggy Lee" If I have to leave in a hurry for a tropical isle, Peggy Lee's music will be in my carry-on!

On a personal note, I was delighted when I actually got to meet and work with Peggy Lee when she was a guest on the JOHNNY CASH SHOW on ABC, and I was the pianist. We spent a nice afternoon between takes, chatting about mutual musician friends. She was gracious and kind to me, and very regal.

So this is my tribute, and I hope, a portrait of the many facets of Peggy Lee. Some of her less well-known material turns out to be some of herbest, so we've tried to include those along with some of her hits. I know that she had to believe in every song she sang or the song didn't get recorded. When you look at the tune list, I hope you'll think "Peggy Lee". I know I do.

And now, as Miss Lee said to Mr. Shearing, a little sentence I repeat to my rhythm section right before we step out on stage; "Shall we swing a little?"

    -Beegie Adair

The best of seasons one to five are all here for the first time ever on DVD. Included are the best episodes from these early years, the original pilot as it aired and tons of extras. Do you remember the Ladybug Picnic? How about Wanda the Witch? Did you learn to count wit

Sesame Street: Old School, Vol. 1 (1969-1974) Overview

Were some of your first friends named Grover, Mr. Hooper, and Bob? Do you remember the Ladybug Picnic? How about Pinball Number Count? Sesame Street Old School is a time capsule of the early days of the ground-breaking series you grew up on. Take a trip back in time with Bert, Ernie, Big Bird and Snuffleupagus. Sing along with classics like "C is for Cookie," "I Love Trash," and "Rubber Duckie." For the first time on DVD, the music, memories, and mayhem from Sesame Street's first five seasons can be enjoyed again and again!

Sesame Street: Old School, Vol. 1 (1969-1974) Specifications

When the Children's Theater Workshop's Sesame Street first aired on television in 1969, it was a revolutionary new show aimed specifically at preschool children--an audience previously untargeted by television programming. Exhaustively-researched and tested on real audiences of preschoolers, this "experiment in kid programming" aimed to teach preschoolers the alphabet, numbers, body parts, rhyming, and basic reasoning skills while thoroughly entertaining them. Through the use of humor, the amazing puppetry of Frank Oz and Jim Henson, animation, the incredibly catchy music of Joe Raposo and Jeffrey Moss, and a fast-action pace borrowed from the television commercial format, Sesame Street was, and still is, more successful at educating and entertaining children than anyone initially imagined. What's more, the lessons learned by generations of preschoolers went far beyond simple school-readiness skills to include values like acceptance, cooperation, and inclusiveness because the urban Sesame Street was a place populated by people and monsters young viewers could identify with, where anything could happen, and where every ethnicity, generation, and species co-existed and interacted harmoniously.

Sesame Street: Old School Volume 1 1969-1974 offers a sampling of the first five seasons of Sesame Street and includes the first episode of each season in its entirety as well as a large selection of classic segments from each season highlighting some of the most memorable sketches ("Bein' Green," "Rubber Duckie," "Whistle a Happy Tune," and Super-Grover in "Telephone Booth"), favorite human characters like Bob and Mr. Hooper, and guest appearances by celebrities like Bill Cosby, Lena Horne, Jackie Robinson, Carol Burnett, and Jesse Jackson. Adult viewers will be transported back in time as they witness Bert's frustration with his ever-noisy roommate Ernie, chuckle at the antics of Grover and his demanding customer in Grover's Restaurant, and wonder if Snuffleupagus will ever show himself to someone besides Big Bird. Other well-remembered moments include pinball number count, the baker who inevitably tumbles down the stairway with a handful of cream pies, the ever-munching Cookie Monster, "Here is Your Life" segments, Bert "Doin' the Pigeon," and the inevitably grumpy Oscar the Grouch. Post-Elmo preschoolers and their parents will laugh, learn, grow, and connect with one another as they share this classic compilation of Sesame Street moments. Bonus features include the original sales pitch reel (introduced by Joan Ganz Cooney and hosted by Kermit the Frog and Rowlf the Dog) and a thick booklet rich with history, trivia, and a pullout activity section for children. Critics have always been singularly unkind to Jimmy Buffett. Or at least they have since the singer became immune to their jabs, commanding a nation of Parrotheads who sell out his shows, snap up his records and books, and eat and drink in his nightclubs in Key West and New Orleans. By now, you've made up your mind as well: To paraphrase Buffett himself from his song "Volcano," you either lava him now, or you lava him not. Songs You Know by Heart is a friendly little best-of collection that features concert perennials such as "Margaritaville," "Fins," "Cheeseburger in Paradise," and the immutable "Why Don't We Get Drunk." Mamma Mia! The Musical Based on the Songs of ABBA: A Decca Broadway Original Cast Recording (1999 London Cast)

Mamma Mia! The Musical Based on the Songs of ABBA: A Decca Broadway Original Cast Recording (1999 London Cast) Overview

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
