Come Away with Me [Vinyl] Specifications

It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD. Jones's own material, while not bad, pales a bit next to such masterpieces. They might have fared better had she and producer Arif Mardin opted for some livelier arrangements, taking better advantage of brilliant sidemen such as Bill Frisell, Kevin Breit, and Brian Blade; or if the tunes had simply been given less laconic performances. Jones has all the tools; what will come with experience and some careful listening to artists like J.J. Cale and Shirley Horn is the knack of remaining low-key without sounding sleepy--sometimes less is not, in fact, more. --Michael Ross

Grace

Grace Overview

With her first couple of albums for Spirit Voyage Music, Snatam Kaur matched her sweet, serene voice with sacred prayers and ancient texts of the Sikhs. The results were gorgeous; the music was spiritual and timeless, yet fresh and contemporary. Grace marks the next step in the musical career for Snatam Kaur, showing her growth as an artist and offering a highly enjoyable hour of music to boot. The arrangements on Grace have much greater crossover potential than those of her previous albums; they feature a heavier use of Western instrumentation (guitars, violin, keyboards) and are a lot more "catchy". Thomas Barquee's role as co-producer no doubt has something to do with this - the man is a master when it comes to adapting kirtans and chants for Western audiences. All in all, Snatam Kaur's Grace is a beautiful album - a must hear for fans of contemporary sacred music.- Grace is Snatam Kaur's journey into more contemporary music and it's a winner! Grace is a totally enjoyable hour of music.

Backstage Secrets: On The Road With The Rock Band Rush

Backstage Secrets: On The Road With The Rock Band Rush Feature

  • Five Episodes on Two Discs
  • Much better quality video than earlier release

Backstage Secrets: On The Road With The Rock Band Rush Overview

Re-released - replicated DVD with better quality video. This is not a DVD on Demand version.

Go behind the scenes to get a backstage look at what it takes to present the legendary band RUSH during the 2008 Snakes & Arrows Concert Tour. It may appear to be one of the most exciting and glamorous jobs in the world - but being a roadie with a top-rated world-famous rock and roll band can be a grueling marathon of 18 hour work days, on an easy day. A bad is actually a couple of days, 40 hours spent hauling gear, assembling huge stacks of speakers, lifting them a hundred feet in the air, tuning instruments for demanding musicians and being cut off from every lover, friend and relative you have.

This series takes you to the show you never see when you take your seat for a concert by the legendary band RUSH. All the backstage secrets are revealed.

This DVD includes 5 parts on two discs including:
Part 1: Sound
Sure it sounds easy. Turn on some speakers and listen to the show. Well, it's a lot more complicated than that.
Part 2: Lights
You don't buy a ticket to hear a rock show; you buy a ticket to see a rock show. Lighting sets the mood for each song.
Part 3: Instrument Technicians
One of the most demanding and stressful jobs on the road is the instrument technician.
Part 4: Lighting and Video
Let's face it, not every seat is in the front row, but everyone pays for a ticket. That means someone has to make sure everyone gets a good look at the band. So each concert is also a television show broadcast on a 50 foot screen.
Part 5: Road Manager
One person has to make sure the whole thing works, every night in every city. The road manager is the conductor of this huge orchestration.
