This Christmas

This Christmas Overview

When your first single from Grease, the biggest movie musical of all time, is the chart-topping "You're the One That I Want," and it becomes the best-selling duet in pop music history - that's a tough act to follow. Almost 35 years later, John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John have combined their iconic voices for This Christmas, a newly recorded album featuring Christmas favorites with guest artists such as Barbara Streisand, Tony Bennett, and James Taylor! Travolta and Newton-John will donate the artist proceeds from the album equally to their respective charities, the Jett Travolta Foundation and the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre in Melbourne, Australia.

James Taylor At Christmas

James Taylor At Christmas Overview

Get into the holiday spirit with James Taylor at Christmas, a collection of 14 holiday favorites recorded by Taylor throughout the years, including his brand new track "Mon Beau Sapin," a French rendition of "O Christmas Tree," which is only available on this collection. James Taylor at Christmas also features his jazzy renditions of "Winter Wonderland" and "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town," Taylor's unique take on "Jingle Bells," a heartwarming rendition of "The Christmas Song" (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire), and a moving version of George Harrison's "Here Comes the Sun" which Taylor recorded with cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Other tracks include his playful duet with Natalie Cole ("Baby, It's Cold Outside"), a cover of Joni Mitchell's "River," his take on the spiritual "Go Tell It On the Mountain", and to cap off the year, the New Year's classic "Auld Lang Syne."

James Taylor At Christmas Specifications

Looking for a smart, never-out-of-style singer who turns in a perfectly solid collection of Christmas songs, including a few surprises? J.T. is your man on James Taylor at Christmas, which is nicely balanced between pop and jazz selections, with more stately hymn-like fare and balladry. Always fine in his charmingly understated voice, Taylor and company try out the old gospel standard "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and the memorable "Some Children See Him." He smoothly cuts through "Winter Wonderland" and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" with a bit of jazz flavor, and reprises Joni Mitchell's increasingly popular Christmas song (even though it's about getting away from the holiday), "River." One of the album's most satisfying delights is Taylor's funky version of "Jingle Bells," sung in a kind of barroom stomp with the most intriguing phrasing since Barbra Streisand sang it in the '60s. Soulful and bright and moody as well (when Taylor sings "In the Bleak Midwinter," you believe it's indeed rough), there's barely a clinker here. -- Martin Keller

Christmas Eve and Other Stories

Christmas Eve and Other Stories Overview

This is a concept album all the way, with tales of Christmas kindness intertwined with masterful musicianship as they play traditionals plus their own An Angel Came Down; First Snow; Ornament; Old City Bar , and more!

Christmas Eve and Other Stories Specifications

Is the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Christmas Eve and Other Stories a holiday rock opera? Or perhaps just a holiday prog-rock disc? Or maybe it's New Age? Whatever the case may be, this isn't your typical Christmas album. Filled with electric guitar solos, plenty of synthesized keyboards, a children's choir, and lively drumming, Christmas Eve can only be compared to one other record, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other holiday disc, The Christmas Attic. On this CD, angelic vocal solos (on numbers such as "The Prince of Peace") are interspersed with driving instrumentals. Sentimental, occasionally bombastic, but as high-concept as holiday albums can be. --Jason Verlinde

Christmas Specifications

Depending on your point of view, Christmas is either a quaint sonic time capsule extracted from the mid-1980s or a timeless holiday classic. The first in what has become an ongoing series of Mannheim Steamroller Christmas recordings, this CD has sold millions, which seems to indicate that it is everything its advertising claims it to be: "America's favorite Christmas music." The powerfully successful Mannheim Steamroller formula, conceived by group mastermind Chip Davis, involves a blend of Renaissance-flavored moods and instrumentation (strings, harpsichord, flute, French horn) intertwined with polite pop instrumental music. At times, the analog synthesizers used in this 1984 recording sound dated and a little cheesy, particularly on "Deck the Halls" and "Good King Wenceslas." But it is a forgivable offense since live instruments and the earnest but ersatz medieval atmosphere they evoke dominate 8 of the 11 tracks. As pleasant and soothing as a Willard Scott birthday wish, Christmas does offer one selection that truly merits "classic" status: the reverent, prayerful, slow-motion interpretation of "Silent Night" ("Stille Nacht") for piano and strings that closes the album--a beautiful and heart-touching work. This selection alone makes this album worth owning. --Terry Wood

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas Overview

No Description Available.
Genre: Soundtracks & Scores
Media Format: Compact Disk
Rating:
Release Date: 24-OCT-2006

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas Specifications

Not only is The Nightmare Before Christmas one of the best musicals of the past two decades; it may well be Danny Elfman's masterpiece, successfully integrating his main influences (from Cab Calloway to Nino Rota) into a fantastic whole. The first disc of this reissue features the original soundtrack, its songs still teetering between dark humor and poetic flights of fancy; this so-called kids' music is at least as sophisticated and skilled as anything you're likely to hear on Broadway. The second disc includes demo versions of four songs on which Elfman plays and sings everything, and five new covers of some of Nightmare's best-loved songs. Marilyn Manson successfully applies his spooky Weimar-circus style on "This Is Halloween" while Panic! At the Disco's lushly orchestrated take on the same tune is closer to the original. Fiona Apple's poignant "Sally's Song" is enhanced by very nice string charts, and She Wants Revenge does a disco take on "Kidnap the Sandy Claws." Best perhaps is Fall Out Boy's cover of "What's This?" which sounds like an unexpected cross between the Beach Boys and Queen. A highly recommended set. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

How the Grinch Stole Christmas: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (2000 Film)

How the Grinch Stole Christmas: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (2000 Film) Overview

Jim Carrey stars in the Ron Howard adaptation of Dr. Seuss's enduring tale of the evil Grinch in Whoville and the Christmas he looks to sabotage. Carrey also lends his quick mouth to "Grinch 2000," a rap duet with Busta Rhymes, and to "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," which he goes alone in a voice somewhere between Buster Poindexter, Don Rickles, and Pavarotti on acid and amphetamines. The mistletoe has its place above country-pop star Faith Hill, who delivers the album's first single, "Where Are You, Christmas?"

Other high-profile names here include those Canadian jokesters BareNaked Ladies, ska-punks Smash Mouth, and that omnipresent boyband 'N Sync. Lesser names like the Eels, the modest pop experiment of a man called "E", and the orchestral grandeur of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra contribute solid festive tunes. A few dialogue bits are scattered throughout, and James Horner's movie score finishes things off.--Rob O'Connor

The Andy Williams Christmas Show (Live from Branson)

The Andy Williams Christmas Show (Live from Branson) Overview

Christmas would not be merry without Andy Williams. Andy's famous Christmas special was taped live at the fabulous Moon River Theatre in Branson and contains 25 of the world's favorite Christmas songs: It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, Christmas Needs Love to be Christmas, Sleigh Ride, I'll Be Home for Christmas, Blue Christmas, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, Jingle Bells, Let It Snow, The Christmas Song, My Favorite Things, Little Snow Girl, White Christmas, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Silver Bells, The Little Drummer Boy, Do You Hear What I Hear?, Mommy Here We Come A-Caroling, Happy Holidays, Angels We Have Heard on High, Joy to the World, O Come All Ye Faithful, The Bells of St. Mary's, Silent Night, O Holy Night, May Each Day.

The Andy Williams Christmas Show (Live from Branson) Specifications

Andy Williams, venerable singing star of countless TV holiday specials, performs onstage at his own theater in Branson, Missouri, before an adoring audience in 1993. Decked out in a succession of sweaters and scarves, Williams does 25 Christmas classics, dances with women wearing reindeer headdresses, sings along with a children's chorus, and welcomes special guests Lorrie Morgan and the Osmond Brothers (who show up wearing jackets featuring rhinestone poinsettias and candy canes). A number of youthful men and women appear throughout in various production numbers, usually dressed as Christmas carolers or partygoers (think more scarves and sweaters), while the band performs on a stage decorated with Christmas trees and lots of fake snow. This is a very professional production, and if it's schmaltzy and utterly middle-of-the-road, that's no doubt what Williams intended. --Robert J. McNamara
