Les Miserables 10th Anniversary Concert

Les Miserables 10th Anniversary Concert Overview

To celebrate 10 years as the world's most popular musical, the cast of Les Mis‚rables threw a phenomenal birthday party at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1995. A decade after Trevor Nunn directed its premiere at the Barbican Centre, and the subsequent move into what became a permanent home at the West End Palace Theatre, producer Cameron Macintosh felt the time had come for a little outing for "the miserables." Conductor David Charles Abell, having climbed out of the cluttered Palace pit, for one glorious night has the entire Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at his disposal and there are appearances from over 150 singers--birthday celebs from Les Mis stagings worldwide--who flocked to the grandiose venue. Hosts for the night are the 1995 London cast: Colm Wilkinson's Valjean has power and beauty in "Who Am I?" and "Bring Him Home," and Michael Ball is a charming Marius. Miss Saigon herself, Lea Salonga, gets the crowd-pleasing favorite "On My Own." The Albert Hall sounds filled to the brim with an appreciative audience that contributes to the festive atmosphere. The result is a real treat for fans and lovers of Boubil and Sch”nberg's greatest musical--this double CD is an obligatory item in every collection of Les Mis memorabilia.

Down from the Mountain (The "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Concert)

Down from the Mountain (The "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Concert) Overview

On May 24, 2000, the historic Ryman Auditorium was booked to offer Nashvillians an evening of sublime beauty. Label executives and soundtrack producers so loved the music of O Brother, Where Art Thou? that they brought it to life as a benefit concert for the Country Music Hall of Fame. Filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen loved it so much that they hired famed documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker to record the show for posterity. The concert that unfolded that night was one of the greatest musical moments in the annals of Music City. Performers: John Hartford, Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Chris Thomas King, The Cox Family, Fairfield Four, Union Station, Colin Linden, The Nashville Bluegrass Band, The Peasall Sisters, Ralph Stanley, David Rawlings, The Whites. 98 minutes.

Down from the Mountain (The "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Concert) Specifications

If you love the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, D.A. Pennebaker, Chris Hegedus, and Nick Doob's exhilarating concert film Down from the Mountain will be sheer heaven. And if you're new to bluegrass and "old-time mountain-style" music, the performances (also on CD) will be a revelation. John Hartford, Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, the Cox family, the venerable Ralph Stanley, and other traditional and alt-country artists who contributed the music to the Coen brothers' spaced odyssey gathered onstage in May 2000 at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium to benefit the Country Music Hall of Fame. Interviews and rehearsal footage set the stage for this stupendous concert, highlights of which include "(Didn't Leave) Nobody but the Baby" by the sirens Harris, Welch, and Krauss; the Coxes' "(Will There Be) Any Stars in My Crown"; and Stanley's haunting "O Death." As one performer recommends, "Just ease in, sit down, and listen." It could be your salvation. --Donald Liebenson

'In Live Concert at the Royal Albert Hall' is a fierce testament to Opeth's continued success in the progressive metal community. Opeth performed two sets that evening - the first of the now classic, 'Blackwater Park' in its entirety and the second, a chronologically arranged selection of material from the rest of Opeth's extensive catalogue.
Bonus features include an exclusive interview and the behind-the-scenes documentary, 'On Tour with Opeth.' DVD's are in 5.1 Dolby surround sound, produced and mixed by Jens Bogren.

Customer Reviews

This double-DVD contains almost 3 hours of concert footage and witnesses Opeth Death Metal lead in the halls of culture, "are linked to the often hilarious Mikael Åkerfeldt. The first set is a complete performance of" Blackwater Park "album, which many consider the masterpiece of the band. The second movement brings fans over the years and the development of Opeth, when the band plays a song from each of their albums in chronological order. Akerfeldt remains calm in a targeted mannerthe sentence, despite the audience asked him to say something. I think it's because they do not want to interrupt the flow of the songs. In the second set, but he is much more talkative and tells you a lot of anecdotes and jokes between songs, much more fun Death Metal singer I've ever seen. But everything on the one hand is the strong performance of the band, with all the expertise you expect. It is an unfortunate technical problem technical in "The Lotus Eater"Newcomer of the guitar Fredrik Akesson, but the band keeps the public to be solved, and things. All in all, this DVD is a must have for fans of Opeth worldwide.
